Curly-Haired Girls Will Relate to Hajra Yamin’s Struggles

Actress Hajra Yamin recently disclosed that she was often discouraged from straightening her naturally curly hair by several drama producers who insisted that her distinctive look was integral to how she would be portrayed on screen. Appearing on Ahmad Ali Butt’s podcast, she shared a candid glimpse into her journey, describing how her move to Karachi—despite its initial difficulties—has led to her forming close friendships and finding a sense of belonging in the city.

During the interview, she explained how her background, which includes time spent in Multan, Saudi Arabia, and Rawalpindi, eventually brought her to Karachi, where her acting career blossomed. She admitted that she faced a fair amount of criticism over the fitness videos and pictures she posts on social media, but she has always chosen to disregard such negativity, focusing instead on her passions.

Yamin also shed light on the rigorous demands of maintaining a social media presence, admitting that while she isn’t highly active online due to her exhausting shooting schedules, she respects the dedication of those who manage to balance both. She commented on the beauty standards within the entertainment industry, revealing that although she has not faced extensive discrimination, she has occasionally encountered casting directors who suggested “enhancing” her beauty. Nonetheless, she steadfastly refused to conform to these expectations, choosing instead to stay true to herself.

Reflecting further, she highlighted how producers had told her not to straighten her hair, saying they cast her specifically for her natural curls. Yamin also remarked that in the entertainment world, social media popularity often trumps traditional beauty when it comes to securing roles, with casting decisions frequently influenced by an actor’s follower count.

Earlier, actress Naima Butt had similarly revealed how she faced pressure to alter her appearance, recounting instances where she was advised to cut her hair short, with one producer even refusing to cast her because she declined to make the change. Yamin’s experiences underscore the ongoing complexities of beauty standards and social media’s impact within the industry.
