Hans Raj Hans: “Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Was a Darvesh”

Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s music, rich with spiritual depth, continues to inspire global audiences, leaving an eternal legacy. Indian singer and politician Hans Raj Hans recently shared his profound admiration for the late maestro.
When journalist Farid Qureshi asked about his experience with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Hans passionately described him as a “darvesh,” not merely a singer. “Such extraordinary individuals are born rarely,” he remarked. “Blessed by the Almighty, Nusrat Sahib was a genius and incredibly humble.”
Hans Raj Hans also expressed his deep connection with Lahore, praising its cultural and spiritual wealth. “Whenever I visit Lahore, I go to Data Sahib, Nanaka Sahib, and Pakpattan. No place matches Pakistan in Tasawwuf, art, or even food. From Phajja’s paye to Lakshmi Chowk’s halwa puris, the flavors are unparalleled,” he said, adding a humorous note about his vegetarian lifestyle.
The acclaimed singer paid tribute to Pakistan’s legendary musicians, mentioning icons like Ustad Niazat, Salamat Ali, Tufail Niazi, Fateh Ali, Amanat Ali, Shaukat Ali, and Attaullah Khan Esakhelvi. “Pakistan has produced irreplaceable musical legends,” he stated.
Hans Raj Hans was recently honored at the House of Lords in London for his immense contributions to music. Hosted by Lord Rami Ranger and organized by Samara Events UK, the ceremony celebrated his legacy.
Hans, a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri award, is renowned for his Punjabi-pop albums and Bollywood playback singing. He has collaborated with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in Kachche Dhaage and contributed to hit movies like Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety, Patiala House, and Bend It Like Beckham.
