Iqra Aziz and Yasir Hussain Advocate Urdu as Kabir’s First Language

Iqra Aziz and Yasir Hussain Prioritize Urdu Over English at Home
Pakistani actor and screenwriter Yasir Hussain, along with his wife, actress Iqra Aziz, recently appeared on a private TV channel’s Ramadan transmission, where they emphasized the importance of speaking Urdu. During the show, host Rabia Anum Obaid commended their son, Kabir, for his fluency in Urdu, noting that many modern parents primarily communicate with their children in English.
When asked if teaching Kabir Urdu was a deliberate choice, Yasir explained, “At home, we strictly speak Urdu, even though he attends an English medium school where he naturally picks up English from classmates and teachers. But within our household, we make sure Urdu remains the primary language.”
Yasir Hussain’s Take on Language Learning
Sharing an incident from his professional life, Yasir recalled, “Kabir once accompanied me to a film set, and someone suggested I focus on teaching him English instead of Urdu. But I believe fluency in Urdu should come first. English can always be learned later, but I’ve seen many people around me who struggle with Urdu despite being proficient in English, which I find problematic.”
Iqra Aziz and Yasir Hussain strongly believe that Urdu is fundamental and should be prioritized in early childhood. Yasir reiterated, “Urdu is basic and must be learned well; other languages are secondary.”
In response, the host noted that while children pick up languages quickly, Pakistan’s education system often fails to ensure a well-rounded multilingual upbringing.
Iqra and Yasir, who tied the knot in 2019 and welcomed their son Kabir in 2021, continue to balance their personal and professional lives, currently being part of the drama serial Paradise.
