Sana Mir Makes History with ICC Hall of Fame Induction

Former Pakistan women’s cricket team captain Sana Mir made history by becoming the first female cricketer from the country to be inducted into the International Cricket Council (ICC) Hall of Fame.

West Indies legend Ian Bishop unveiled Mir as one of seven new inductees at a ceremony ahead of the World Test Championship final. She joined the ranks alongside India’s MS Dhoni, England’s Sarah Taylor, South Africa’s Hashim Amla and Graeme Smith, Australia’s Matthew Hayden, and New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori.

Representing Pakistan from 2005 to 2019, the former off-spinning all-rounder set numerous records and now becomes one of only 14 women and eight Pakistanis to receive this honour.

Mir holds the record as Pakistan’s highest wicket-taker in women’s ODIs with 151 wickets and became the first Asian woman to play 100 T20 Internationals. During her eight-year captaincy, she led Pakistan to two Asian Games gold medals (2010 and 2014) and guided the team through five T20 World Cups and two ODI World Cups.

She delivered standout performances, including Pakistan’s first ODI win over South Africa and a match-winning 5/14 against Scotland during the 2017 World Cup qualifiers. Mir retired in 2019 as one of the country’s most decorated athletes.

“From dreaming as a little girl of simply having a women’s team in Pakistan to now being inducted alongside legends I idolised — this is beyond anything I imagined,” said Mir, as quoted by the ICC.

She expressed gratitude to her teammates, coaches, and family, adding that she hopes to continue contributing to the sport in the future.

Other Pakistani cricketers inducted into the Hall of Fame include Imran Khan, Wasim Akram, Javed Miandad, Abdul Qadir, Zaheer Abbas, Waqar Younis, and Hanif Mohammad.
