Sarwat Gilani encourages young people to think about getting married in their 30s

Sarwat Gilani, a talented artist, activist, and outspoken voice, often discusses socially taboo topics. In a recent appearance on the Rukhsat podcast, she expressed her thoughts on marriage, companionship, and generational trauma. She advised young people to consider waiting until their 30s to marry, rather than rushing into it in their 20s. In Pakistan, individuals are often viewed as “expired milk” after turning 24, but Sarwat encouraged Gen Z to challenge this mindset and create change.
She also touched on the dynamics of arranged marriages, noting that they can sometimes prove more successful than love marriages. “There are no guarantees nowadays. In an arranged setting, expectations are built from zero, and sometimes that works out, while a six-year-long love relationship can end in minutes,” she said. Sarwat herself is happily married to Fahad Mirza, with whom she shares three children.
Sarwat advised young people to wait until their 30s to get married, rather than marrying in their 20s. She explained, “In your 20s, you’re still figuring yourself out and are often confused, so it’s important to wait and gain maturity before taking that step.”
