Sonya Hussyn Shifts Focus from Acting to Film Production

At a recent promotional event for the upcoming horror film Deemak in Lahore, actor Sonya Hussyn surprised fans and industry insiders by announcing a major shift in her career path. She revealed she is stepping back from acting to focus more on film production and potentially direction.

“I’ve gotten into production now,” Hussyn told the media at the event. A video of her statement, shared Tuesday, quickly went viral on social media. “I’m in the directorial team of Shaan, which is a very emotional film,” she added.

Hussyn also shared that she’s producing an action film. “I want to do a lot of production and create films with substance,” she said, emphasizing her desire to shape stories rather than just perform in them.

With this career pivot, Hussyn acknowledged that fans will likely see her on screen less frequently. “I’m probably going to be onscreen a lot less,” she said.

However, audiences can still catch her in a lead role in Deemak, a horror-family drama directed by Rafay Rashdi, set for release this Eidul Azha. Hussyn praised the script and the ensemble cast, including industry legends Javed Sheikh, Bushra Ansari, Samina Peerzada, and Faysal Quraishi. “If they’re in it, to me, it means that the story has substance,” she explained.

Discussing her role, Hussyn noted the challenge of portraying supernatural possession while avoiding confusion with mental illness. “There’s a difference between having a mental illness and being possessed that I had to get across to my audience,” she said.

She recalled one particularly intense scene involving a possession that left the set in stunned silence. “When I filmed that scene, there was pin-drop silence on set,” she said. “I guess even everyone on set was slightly unsettled by it.”

Hussyn’s pivot toward meaningful storytelling continues her journey into production, which began with her debut as producer on Babli/Babar last November — a bold project directed by Kamran Faiq and written by Qurbe Abbas.
