Closing out 2023, Pakistan’s film industry continues to shine on the global stage, generating significant buzz at international festivals. Recently, Zarrar Kahn’s ‘In Flames’ and Sarmad Khoosat’s ‘Kamli’ earned recognition at prestigious platforms for their remarkable artistry and dedication to storytelling.

Taking to Instagram, Kahn shared the impressive reception of ‘In Flames’ at the International Film Festival Mannheim-Heidelberg (IFFMH). The film secured the International Newcomer Award. The director expressed his joy at the occasion by quoting the festival jury’s statement in the caption.

Kahn said that, “I still can’t believe we won. Thank you to all the incredible people who believed in our film.” In Flames marks Pakistan’s return to the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight since Jamil Dehlavi’s entry The Blood of Hussain was selected in 1980 and was this year’s nominee at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Saba Qamar – Best Actor Award

Saba Qamar won the Best Actor Award, Sarmad Khoosat received the Best Director Award, and the film was honoured with the Viewers’ Choice accolade at the prestigious Listapad festival, the largest film festival in Belarus. Khoosat Films and the director celebrated this triumph on their official Instagram accounts.”

The enthusiastic reception of ‘In Flames,’ ‘Kamli,’ and Saim Sadiq’s ‘Joyland’ in 2023 alone has revived artists’ hopes for the future of filmmaking in Pakistan. This is particularly true when addressing subject matters previously assumed to be unpopular among the viewing public.
