Prakash Raj Supports Release of Fawad Khan’s Abir Gulaal

Veteran actor and activist Prakash Raj has publicly supported Abir Gulaal, the Fawad Khan-starrer facing pushback in India.
Condemning the growing trend of film bans, Raj warned that silencing artistic voices breeds fear and threatens democratic values. “I don’t support banning any film—be it right-wing or propaganda. Audiences are smart enough to decide for themselves,” he said in a recent statement.
He addressed the backlash surrounding Abir Gulaal, which stars Pakistani actor Fawad Khan and reportedly tackles themes of identity and conflict. Critics have labeled the film politically sensitive, prompting unofficial censorship efforts.
Known for championing free speech, Raj criticized the government’s inaction against such pressure. “In a democracy, we cannot start banning films based on the cast or content. That path leads to cultural authoritarianism,” he asserted.
The controversy has reignited debate around artistic freedom and cross-border collaboration in Indian cinema. Although no official ban exists, reports suggest behind-the-scenes moves to block the film’s release.
