Sunny Deol Backs Fawad Khan: “We Are Actors”

Bollywood actor Sunny Deol addressed the growing controversy surrounding Abir Gulaal, which marks Pakistani superstar Fawad Khan’s much-anticipated return to Indian cinema.

As tensions reignite over cross-border artistic collaborations, Deol shared his views in a recent interview with HT City, offering a grounded perspective.

When asked whether he supported Pakistani actors like Fawad Khan in Bollywood, Deol, known for his fiery patriotic roles in films like Border and Gadar, responded, “See, I wouldn’t like to go on to the political side because that’s where things start getting messy.”

He emphasized his identity as an artist and said, “We are actors, we work for everyone all over the world. Even if somebody is watching on Mars or anywhere, we are for everyone. So, aisi koi baat nahi hain [it’s nothing like that]. The way the world has become, we should stay global and let there be more countries; that’s the way it should be.”

Opposition from Right Wing Hindus

Deol’s remarks followed renewed opposition from the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), which strongly objected to the film’s release in Maharashtra due to Khan’s involvement.

Additionally, Indian Film and TV Directors’ Association chief Ashoke Pandit threatened to launch protests against Khan’s return.

Khan, who charmed audiences in Khoobsurat (2014) and Kapoor & Sons (2016), stepped away from Indian films after the industry imposed an unofficial ban on Pakistani artists in 2016. In 2023, the Bombay High Court dismissed a petition seeking a formal ban, asserting that art should not be politicised.

Directed by Aarti S Bagdi, Abir Gulaal promises “a heartwarming tale from the picturesque streets of London,” featuring laughter, emotional depth, and the onscreen chemistry between Khan and co-star Vaani Kapoor. The film is set to release in Indian theatres on May 9.

While Abir Gulaal may face political resistance, fans continue to welcome Fawad Khan’s return to Bollywood with open arms.
