Recalling his Vision of Casting Fawad and Mahira in Heeramandi
Reflecting on the project’s genesis, which lasted over 18 years, Bhansali confessed that initially, “Heeramandi” was conceived as a film. Exploring various casting options, he envisioned luminaries like Rekha Ji, Kareena Kapoor, and Rani Mukerji; he then pivoted to consider the inclusion of Mahira Khan, along with Pakistani actors Imran Abbas and Fawad Khan; however, the final ensemble cast took a different direction.
“Heeramandi” is not merely a narrative but an emotion tangled with threads of love, power, freedom, and the resilience of extraordinary women. Bhansali’s narrative digs deep into the lives, desires, and tribulations of courtesans amidst the tumultuous backdrop of the Indian freedom movement against British colonial rule in the 1940s, centered around the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore, British India (present-day Pakistan).
