Pakistani celebrities quickly celebrated the film’s achievement. Mahira Khan expressed her support by sharing a clip of Basel Adra’s acceptance speech on her Instagram Stories, adding Palestinian flag emojis to acknowledge the victory.

No Other Land, a documentary depicting the displacement of a Palestinian community by the Israeli military, won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature on Sunday, Reuters reported. Directed by Basel Adra, Hamdan Ballal, Yuval Abraham, and Rachel Szor, the Palestinian-Israeli co-production has sparked widespread reactions.

Ali Sethi also showed his appreciation by re-sharing a photo of Adra standing beside displaced West Bank residents, Farisa Abu Aram and Kifah Adara, holding their Academy Award.

Meanwhile, Nadia Afgan highlighted a critical perspective by posting a video from digital creator Michael Schirtzer. In his video, Schirtzer congratulated the filmmakers but criticized co-director Yuval Abraham’s speech for focusing more on Israeli hostages than the ongoing genocide in Palestine. He labeled this approach as “liberal Zionism,” which, he argued, blurs the distinction between the oppressor and the oppressed. Afgan refrained from adding her own comments but has consistently supported Palestine on social media, with her profile picture displaying the Palestinian flag.

Many other Pakistani celebrities, including Yumna Zaidi, Asim Azhar, Adnan Malik, and Iqra Aziz, have also condemned the genocide in Palestine.

Since its premiere in February 2023, No Other Land has gained critical acclaim, winning the Berlinale Documentary Award and the Panorama Audience Award for Best Documentary Film at the Berlin International Film Festival 2024.

During his acceptance speech, Basel Adra expressed mixed emotions about the win. “I am here celebrating the award, but it is also very hard for me to celebrate when tens of thousands of my people are being slaughtered and massacred by Israel in Gaza. Masafer Yatta, my community, is being razed by Israeli bulldozers. I ask one thing: for Germany, as I am in Berlin here, to respect the UN calls and stop sending weapons to Israel,” he stated.
