Sharjeel Memon: Take action over Tabish Hashmi’s “foolish” privatisation comments
Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has strongly condemned TV host Tabish Hashmi’s remarks calling for the privatisation of Karachi, urging the private news channel that aired his comments to take disciplinary action.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Memon reacted sharply to the suggestion, made during a talk show discussing Karachi’s governance. Without naming Hashmi directly, he criticised the remarks as “foolish” and “stupid,” arguing that they showed a deep ignorance of law, history, and Sindh’s geography.
“The person who said this has neither studied constitutional law nor understood Sindh’s historical and geographical significance,” Memon stated. “Such irresponsible statements reflect a total disregard for Sindh’s constitutional role in Pakistan.”
He called on the channel to conduct an internal inquiry and take appropriate action against the host, emphasising that media organisations must uphold responsible journalism and avoid spreading misleading narratives.
Memon also underlined Sindh’s foundational importance in the creation of Pakistan, adding that many commentators speak on sensitive provincial matters without adequate knowledge of its history or context.
The controversy stems from Hashmi’s recent appearance on a private news channel following the deadly Gul Plaza fire in Karachi. Hashmi had controversially suggested privatising the city, drawing a comparison to the privatisation of PIA, and claimed that Karachi’s residents could govern it better themselves.
The Gul Plaza fire, which broke out on the night of January 17, gutted the multi?storey commercial building housing around 1,200 shops. According to the latest reports, more than 79 bodies have been recovered, with search operations still ongoing.
