Pakistani cricketer Haider Ali finds himself at the centre of a storm after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) provisionally suspended him amid an ongoing criminal investigation in the United Kingdom.

The 24-year-old batter, once hailed as one of Pakistan’s brightest prospects, was reportedly interviewed under caution by Greater Manchester Police during the Pakistan Shaheens’ recent tour of England. While the exact nature of the allegations remains undisclosed, PCB officials confirmed that Haider is not in police custody and has since returned to Pakistan.

According to PCB sources, the board was officially informed by UK authorities and acted without delay to sideline the player from all cricket-related activities.

In an official statement, the PCB stressed its commitment to due process:

“The PCB fully respects the legal procedures of the United Kingdom and will allow the investigation to run its course. Haider Ali has been placed under provisional suspension, effective immediately, pending the outcome of the inquiry. We are providing him with legal support to ensure his rights are protected throughout this process.”

The incident is believed to have occurred during the Shaheens’ UK tour, which wrapped up earlier this week. Haider, considered one of the senior members of the squad, took part in all three 50-over fixtures against a First-Class Counties XI as well as two three-day matches.

Haider Ali’s cricketing journey has been a rollercoaster. Rising to prominence from Pakistan’s 2020 U19 World Cup squad, he quickly earned a spot in the national side, playing two ODIs and 35 T20Is. However, in recent years, his international appearances have been rare, with most of his performances coming at the domestic and Pakistan A levels.

The PCB has confirmed that any further disciplinary action will be determined after the UK legal process concludes. For now, Haider Ali’s career remains in limbo and depending on the investigation’s outcome, he risks becoming another cautionary tale in Pakistan cricket’s long list of unfulfilled talents.
