A fresh debate over Pakistan’s highest-profile entertainment awards has emerged after Sindh Culture and Tourism Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah claimed that Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa were nominated twice for the prestigious Sitara-e-Imtiaz but were ultimately not selected.
Speaking at the opening of the eight-day Wes-Dhaari Sindhi Theatre Festival 2026 in Karachi, Shah questioned why two of the country's most prominent actors were overlooked despite their contributions to Pakistan's entertainment industry.
According to the minister, the Sindh Culture Department submitted the names of both Mahira and Fahad for the national honour on two separate occasions. He said the nominations were put forward by a committee made up of prominent personalities, but the federal government did not approve the recommendations.
Shah said no clear reason had been provided for why the two stars were not included among the recipients.
The minister's comments have put the spotlight back on the question of how Pakistan's artists are recognised at the national level. Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa are among the country's biggest entertainment names, with both having built careers that extend well beyond television and films.
Mahira has become one of Pakistan's most recognisable faces internationally, while Fahad has established himself as an actor, television host and producer. Shah described both as major stars who have helped represent Pakistan beyond its borders.
