Mawra Hocane Talks About Challenges for Pakistani Actors in Bollywood

Mawra Hocane

In an interview with Times of India, Mawra Hocane shared her thoughts on the challenges Pakistani artists face in Indian films. “I don’t take it personally. This is how the world works. I truly believe if it’s meant to happen, it will,” she said.

Mawra, who starred alongside Harshvardhan Rane in the 2016 film Sanam Teri Kasam, explained, “I block the noise around my work. I love what I do, so I don’t let these things affect me. It’s the producer’s problem, not mine. If I start worrying about what will happen, I’ll always be restless.”

Her remarks follow significant opposition to Fawad Khan’s Bollywood comeback film Abir Gulaal in Maharashtra. Last Thursday, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, objected to the film’s release in the state due to Fawad’s Pakistani nationality. MNS spokesperson Ameya Khopkar stated, “We just learned about this film’s release. We won’t allow it to release in Maharashtra because it features a Pakistani actor.”

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam echoed this sentiment, citing India’s strong anti-Pakistan feelings. He noted, “There is widespread hatred for Pakistan in India. Indian audiences don’t prefer watching Pakistani films. Even if a few watch out of curiosity, Pakistani artists haven’t had widespread success here.”

Abir Gulaal, directed by Aarti S Bagdi and starring Vaani Kapoor, was filmed in London and is set for release on May 9.

When asked about her recent contact with Fawad, Mawra shared, “When my colleagues do well, we reach out to each other. I wish the best for everyone. I hope this film does really well.”

Though Mawra has only appeared in one Bollywood film, Sanam Teri Kasam, her career has flourished in the industry. The 2016 film, initially a box office disappointment, saw a remarkable comeback after gaining popularity on OTT platforms. Mawra described the experience as “the best time of my life” as it coincided with her wedding. She added, “I wish I could have seen the audience’s love in the theaters. It was surreal.”

Reflecting on her Bollywood future, Mawra said, “I’m grateful for the success of something I did nine years ago. I would love to do more films in India if the conditions allow. I’d love to be a part of more movies like Sanam Teri Kasam.”

Fresh from her marriage to Ameer Gilani, Mawra recently starred in the music video for Tu Chaand Hai by Indian singer Akhil Sachdeva. Announcing the release on Instagram, she wrote, “So excited to share this beautiful melody with you all. I can’t wait for you to hear it.”

In a statement, she added, “Music videos have always fascinated me, and I couldn’t have asked for a better song. Working with the team has been incredible. I can’t wait for my fans to see this beautiful journey unfold.”

Amid growing tensions following India’s unsubstantiated claims linking Pakistan to the Pahalgam attack, Fahad opened his show by saluting the bravery and professionalism of the armed forces.

He specifically praised the Pakistan Air Force for launching Operation Bunyan Al Marsoos, which effectively countered India’s provocation and led to a US-backed ceasefire. Fahad Mustafa’s tribute instantly went viral, resonating with viewers who applauded his bold and patriotic stance.

Indo-Pak Tensions: Mawra Hocane, Mahira Khan Erased from Indian Film Album Cover

Mawra Hocane

In a fresh wave of cross-border fallout, the images of Pakistani actresses Mawra Hocane and Mahira Khan have been removed from the album covers of their Bollywood films Sanam Teri Kasam and Raees, respectively. The move follows the recent social media bans on Pakistani celebrities in India and reflects growing industry-wide restrictions. On platforms like Spotify and YouTube Music, Sanam Teri Kasam album covers now only show Indian actor Harshvardhan Rane, with Mawra Hocane entirely removed. Similarly, Mahira Khan’s image alongside Shah Rukh Khan has been edited out from the Raees music album art.

Harshvardhan Rane Exits Sanam Teri Kasam Sequel

This development comes just as actor Harshvardhan Rane announced his decision to withdraw from Sanam Teri Kasam 2 in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack. Taking to Instagram, Rane stated he would not be part of the sequel “if there’s any chance of the previous cast returning,” implying disapproval of Mawra Hocane’s political stance. His statement included a pointed message against Mawra’s criticism of India’s Operation Sindoor, calling her remarks “unpardonable.”

Mawra Hocane Fires Back, Calls It Publicity Gimmick

Not one to stay silent, Mawra Hocane swiftly responded to Rane’s post, calling it a “PR strategy” rooted in desperation. She condemned the timing of his announcement, criticizing the exploitation of a sensitive geopolitical situation for personal attention. In a strongly-worded statement, Hocane said, “You just DO NOT use war for your personal benefit… it’s a grave situation.”
