Hania Aamir has come forward with criticism of what she termed a recurring, uniquely Pakistani cycle of shifting from one disaster to the next without any real closure, after footage emerged of police intervening at a sit-in in Karachi.
The clip, posted on the actor's Instagram story, captures law enforcement personnel breaking up a protest that had been staged at Shara e Faisal the previous day by relatives of Pakistani seafarers who have remained in captivity under Somali pirates since April of this year.
Aamir characterized the pattern as "deeply alarming," observing that accountability tends to get lost somewhere along the way in the transition from one emergency to the next.
She went further, questioning how much more the population is "supposed to endure" before substantive change eventually follows.
Aamir's post came one day after several of the sailors' family members claimed they had been briefly taken into custody by police on the morning of a scheduled rally. Police, however, insisted they had only "interacted" with the demonstrators in an attempt to persuade them to leave their position near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs liaison office, and rejected allegations that they had employed force to break up the gathering.
The sit-in marks the most recent in a series of demonstrations held over the last five months calling on the government to secure the seafarers' release, none of which has resulted in any meaningful headway.
