Legendary ghazal maestro Mehdi Hasan passed away at a private hospital in Karachi this morning.
Mehdi Hasan had been under treatment at hospitals in Pakistan for over an year, and there had also been reports of shifting him to India. He was admitted at a hospital in Karachi for the past couple of weeks after he had developed a chest infection and breathing problems.
He passed away after he was shifted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the hospital.
It is expected that funeral prayers will be held after Zuhr prayers tomorrow (Thursday).
Mehdi Hasan was born into a family of traditional musicians at Luna village, India, in 1927. His family migrated to Pakistan after 1947. He had been awarded the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, Pride of Performance and Hilal-e-Imtiaz by the Pakistani government.
