Rahat Fateh Ali Khan has praised Indian Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh for his rendition of his uncle, legendary qawwali singer Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan’s classic Sanson Ki Maala.
Speaking at an exclusive meet-and-greet in Toronto on Sunday, Khan was asked about Dosanjh’s performance of the iconic song.
He applauded the Punjabi star for taking on a Nusrat classic, noting that many artists may hesitate to perform songs associated with the late qawwali maestro.
“A lot of artists get afraid to perform a Khan saab song, but Diljit bhai sang it from the heart with all the power he could. We can see that and hear it, so I will appreciate it,” Khan said.
Dosanjh performed Sanson Ki Maala on September 12 at Wembley Stadium in London as part of his AURA World Tour, becoming the first Punjabi artist to headline the iconic venue.
The performance served as a tribute to Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, whose music has continued to resonate with audiences across generations and borders. Dosanjh’s interpretation quickly drew attention online, with fans praising his vocals and the emotion he brought to the classic.
One fan who attended the Wembley show wrote, “I had goosebumps watching this live in Wembley, absolutely amazing concert. Can this version be released on Spotify soon?”
