The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed that a response be submitted within seven days regarding singer Meesha Shafi's miscellaneous application, which challenges a trial court's ruling that required her to pay Rs5 million in damages in a defamation suit brought by fellow singer Ali Zafar.
A two-judge bench, presided over by Justice Ahmad Nadeem Arshad, took up Shafi's appeal contesting the decision handed down by the lower court.
In her appeal, Shafi contended that the trial court had failed to properly evaluate both the factual circumstances and the applicable legal provisions while adjudicating the defamation case.
She further asserted that the defamation proceedings had been concluded without any substantive determination regarding the validity of her sexual harassment accusations against Zafar.
Shafi apprised the court that litigation concerning her sexual harassment claims remains pending before the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
As per her plea, an allegation that has not been proven cannot automatically be deemed false simply on the grounds that it remains unsubstantiated.
