Nabeel Gabol alleges Netflix is preparing a series on Lyari

Veteran politician and PPP leader Nabeel Gabol has set off a wave of discussion online after saying Netflix is working on a major scripted series about Lyari, one of Karachi’s most well-known neighbourhoods.

Speaking during the ongoing controversy around the Indian film Dhurandhar, Gabol claimed a Netflix team approached him about a proposed three-season project that, in his words, would show the “real Lyari.” He said the series would dig into the area’s history, power dynamics and socio-political landscape, pushing back against what he believes are unfair depictions in international productions. He also alleged that a Netflix crew is expected to visit Pakistan in March in connection with the project.

Gabol’s comments drew even more attention when he mentioned casting. He claimed a producer or director floated the idea of bringing in Brazilian actor Wagner Moura, famous for playing Pablo Escobar in Narcos, suggesting a resemblance between the two and hinting that a character could be shaped by Gabol’s own political story in Lyari.

The remarks follow Gabol’s recent criticism of Dhurandhar, which reportedly includes a character named “Jameel Jamali” that he says is based on him. He has called that portrayal misleading, arguing his real role in Lyari politics was far more assertive than shown. He has also repeatedly rejected what he describes as “negative propaganda” about Lyari, stressing that the neighbourhood’s identity extends beyond crime to include strong cultural and sporting roots.

So far, Netflix has not confirmed any such series, any March visit, or Wagner Moura’s involvement, and media observers note that while Lyari could make for compelling drama, claims involving international stars remain unverified.
