This story not only highlights the high regard in which Nusrat is held but also serves as a reminder of the power of music to bridge cultural divides and foster mutual respect and understanding.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, born on October 13, 1948, in Lyallpur (now Faisalabad), Pakistan, and who passed away on August 16, 1997, in London, England, is regarded as one of the greatest performers of qawwali, a form of Sufi Muslim devotional music known for its simple melodies, forceful rhythms, and energetic improvisations that evoke euphoria in listeners.

Nusrat’s father, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan, along with his uncles, Ustad Mubarik Ali Khan and Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, were renowned qawwals who sang in the classical tradition. Although Nusrat showed a strong interest in music and a talent for singing before the age of 10, he fully committed to the qawwali tradition only after singing at his father’s funeral in 1964. Two years later, he performed publicly for the first time as a qawwal, singing with his uncles until Ustad Mubarik’s death in 1971.
