Superstar Fawad Khan admits ‘Abir Gulaal’—his latest cross-border romantic drama—has put him under immense pressure. The film faces repeated delays ahead of its worldwide release on September 12 (tomorrow).
?
In a recent interview, Khan said he chose to join the film because he wanted to counter the increasingly heavy themes dominating cinema today.
?
“The trend leans toward intensity, seriousness and violent subjects,” he observed. “In such times, we need a light-hearted, simple love story.”
?
Khan stars opposite Indian actor Vaani Kapoor in the film. He likened ‘Abir Gulaal’ to “a palate cleanser — like a meal made from simple ingredients where you can savour every flavour individually.”
?
Still, he admitted the film’s release hurdles left him deeply worried. “I stayed under heavy pressure the whole time,” he said, adding that the project’s bumpy path to theatres reflects both production snags and political headwinds.
?
Producers originally slated the film for release on May 9, then pushed it to August 29 before rescheduling it again for September 12 across 75 countries. Despite the global rollout, India has barred the film due to its continuing ban on Pakistani artists.
?
Earlier this year, India’s Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) reinforced that restriction. The move followed renewed pressure from groups like the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) and the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). The Pulwama attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir had already hardened such policies, freezing multiple cross-border collaborations.
?
Aarti S Bagdi—known for Chalti Rahe Zindagi—directs the film. Indian Stories, A Richer Lens and Aarjay Pictures produce it, with Vivek B Agarwal, Avantika Hari and Rakesh Sippy serving as backers. Alongside Khan and Kapoor, the cast includes Lisa Hayden, Ridhi Dogra, Parmeet Sethi and veteran actor Farida Jalal.
?
The romantic drama follows Khan as a UK-based chef, weaving cross-cultural themes into a love story. Amit Trivedi composed its soundtrack, which has already struck a chord online—several songs have gained traction ahead of the film’s release.
?
For Khan, ‘Abir Gulaal’ marks his first Bollywood role in nearly a decade. He made his Indian debut in 2014 with Khoobsurat, then followed it with acclaimed turns in Kapoor & Sons and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. But India’s 2016 ban on Pakistani artists abruptly cut short his Bollywood trajectory, shelving multiple projects.
?
Producers have booked more than 1,000 screens in 75 countries for the film—their international strategy signals confidence. Trade observers expect diaspora audiences in North America, Europe and the Middle East to drive its box office performance.
?
In Pakistan, anticipation runs high. Khan’s pairing with a Bollywood co-star after years has stirred excitement among fans, fueling strong pre-release buzz.
?
Beyond entertainment, the film highlights the ongoing challenges of cultural exchange between India and Pakistan. While audiences across the region still crave cross-border collaborations, political restrictions keep narrowing that space.
