Akhtar Chanal Opens Up on ‘Dane Pe Dana’ and ‘Afghan Jalebi’ Controversy
Renowned Balochi folk artist Akhtar Chanal Zahri discussed his popular hits, emerging Balochi musicians, and the controversy surrounding his song ‘Afghan Jalebi’ during the 35-day international cultural fair organized by Geo Digital and the Karachi Arts Council.
The event showcases artists from 40 countries, with Pakistani folk musicians gaining recognition for their unique styles.
Akhtar Chanal shared that his song ‘Dane Pe Dana’ brought him fame after he adapted it from a fakir’s performance and first performed it for a local news network. “I heard a fakir singing this song beautifully in Qalat, so I changed it, and the love I received was overwhelming. It was a miraculous song that later reached Coke Studio,” he said. However, he expressed dissatisfaction with Coke Studio for reasons he plans to address later.

Regarding ‘Afghan Jalebi,’ from an Indian film and originally performed by Pakistani musician Asrar Shah, Akhtar Chanal clarified his involvement. “I was approached to sing for an Indian movie, but the lyrics were too inappropriate for me as a folk artist,” he explained. After the producers encouraged him to modify the lyrics, he recorded his version, which was released online, while Asrar Shah’s version was featured in the film. He added that he distanced himself from the project once he realized the film had an anti-Pakistan storyline.
Chanal also congratulated rising Baloch artists such as Kafi Khalil, Wahab Bugti, and Eva B for their contributions to Balochi music, particularly with their popular track ‘Kanha Yaari.’ He emphasized the growing popularity of Balochi music, especially in the Middle East, noting its unique appeal that transcends language barriers.
He praised the organizers of the International Cultural Fair, highlighting how the participation of international artists helps portray a positive image of Pakistan and stressed the importance of continuing such events in the future.
